چکیده

Many reports have demonstrated that Mycoplasma pneumonia (M. pneumoniae) infection may cause the release of multiple cytokines into sputum or serum samples. However, studies focusing on bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) samples are scarce. The aim of this study was to identify the cytokines associated with M. pneumoniae infection, and explore the possible factors affecting their secretion during acute lower respiratory tract infection. 60 children with confirmed M. pneumoniae infection complicated with atelectasis, according to chest X-ray or CT scan data, and 20 children with confirmed foreign bodies in the airways (control group) were enrolled. Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) samples were obtained by flexible bronchoscopy, and assessed for the presence of interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and interferon (IFN)-γ. Interestingly, IL-1β, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, and IFN-γ amounts were increased in M. pneumonia infected children compared with the control group. Multiple univariate analyses of variance and multiple linear regressions showed that fever during bronchoscopy markedly affected IL-1β, IL-4, IL-10 and IFN-γ concentrations. In conclusion, IL-1β, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10 and IFN-γ levels were increased in BALF from patients with M. pneumonia. Increased levels of secreted IL-1β, IL-4, IL-10 and IFN-γ were associated with fever in these patients.

The prevalence of Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection in patients with ventilator-associated pneumonia hospitalized in intensive care unit

Background: Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is a type of hospital acquired pneumonia with the mortality rate between 27% and 76% that develops more than 48–72 h after endotracheal intubation. Possible causes leading to this infection can be Mycoplasma pneumoniae. The objective of this study was to determine the presence of Mycoplasma pneumoniae in bronchoalveolar samples of patients with ...

Levels of Interleukin-2, Interferon-g, and Interleukin-4 in Bronchoalveolar Lavage Fluid From Patients With Mycoplasma Pneumonia: Implication of Tendency Toward Increased Immunoglobulin E Production

Objective. In connection with the possible relationship between Mycoplasma infection and the onset of asthma, several studies have shown not only a high level of serum total immunoglobulin E (IgE) but also the production of IgE specific to Mycoplasma or common allergens during the course of Mycoplasma infection. It has been suggested that the balance of T helper type 1 (TH1)/T helper type 2 (TH...

SP-D, KL-6, and HTI-56 levels in children with mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia.

UNLABELLED The study was aimed to evaluate the potential biomarkers from pulmonary surfactant protein D (SP-D), Krebs von den Lungen-6 (KL-6), and 56-kD a human type I protein (HTI-56) in serum and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid samples of children with Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia. This retrospective study, self-controlled study enrolled 34 Chinese children with M. pneumoniae pneumonia. The l...

Effects of respiratory Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection on allergen-induced bronchial hyperresponsiveness and lung inflammation in mice.

Airway mycoplasma infection may be associated with asthma pathophysiology. However, the direct effects of mycoplasma infection on asthma remain unknown. Using a murine allergic-asthma model, we evaluated the effects of different timing of airway Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection on bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR), lung inflammation, and the protein levels of Th1 (gamma interferon [IFN-gamma])...

Clinical use of capillary PCR to diagnose Mycoplasma pneumonia.

In the present study, serologic data were compared with data obtained by capillary PCR to establish the efficacy of capillary PCR for the determination of Mycoplasma infection in samples obtained from throat swabs, bronchoalveolar lavage fluids (BALF), and sputum of patients with Mycoplasma pneumonia. We performed PCR analysis for Mycoplasma DNA on a total of 325 samples from 197 patients with ...
